Cleaning the hull of the boat from biofouling is carried out by a contactless method with the help of sea water supplied under ultrahigh pressure (UHP) to the surface. Since the degree of contamination can be different, as well as in different areas of the same vessel fouling can have a different nature, the diver first selects the level of necessary pressure, starting with the lowest. The outlet pressure is regulated on the shore by an assistant diver, who has a direct contact with the diver. Being an object moving on the surface of the water, a sailing yacht experiences resistance of dual nature: it spends energy to overcome the viscosity of water and to excite oscillations its surface – ship waves. If you carefully observe the moving motor yacht, you can see that some of the water moves with the hull. A yacht, even if its hull is completely smooth, is always accompanied by a layer of water during movement.

 

At low speeds, the flow of water that flows around the bottom has an orderly movement (this is a laminar flow), and at high speeds – random movement (turbulent flow). The molecules of the liquid directly adjacent to the surface of the moving body, stick to it; As a result, a transition boundary layer is formed next to it, in which a large velocity gradient occurs.

 

The formula defining the amount of friction resistance has been developed by an English naval architect Mr. William Froude. He found out that the resistance depends on the size of the underwater part of the hull, the state of the outer surface and is proportional to the square of the speed. A longer submerged part has a lower specific resistance as compared to a shorter one. A rougher surface creates more friction than a smoother surface.

 

On rough surfaces, turbulence increases significantly, and the degree of roughness affects the turbulence exponentially upward. Vortex resistance increases with increasing speed and causes turbulent flows. The greater the degree of turbulence – the more energy must be spent on maintaining speed. And, as we know, the energy expended is fuel consumption. In other words – the less often you clean the underwater part of the vessel from fouling, the more you spend the fuel on the movement of the vessel. Clean more often! The greater its roughness, the greater the friction of water. Overgrowth of the bottom in the biological conditions of the Adriatic aquatic basin increases friction up to 50% per year. For two years, this figure can reach 100%, that is, the friction of the body against water will have a double indicator. In the case of very heavy fouling, when a hanging beard of shells and small algae is formed on the lower part of the yacht, friction sometimes increases even by three or even 5 times compared to friction with a smooth bottom.
